The MTD system from HMRC requires users to grant authority to the software that they use to make submissions. If you are an agent, you only need to do this once for each software supplier no matter how many clients you have. The authority is valid for 18 months. Whether you are an agent, an individual or submitting a VAT return for a business, you will need to grant authority before you can make an MTD submission using Ftax or any other software. This guide explains how to grant authority to Ftax. It is broken down into the following steps:
Log in to your Ftax account, go to the 'Account Home' page and click the link 'Click here to Authorise Ftax':
Clicking the 'Authorise' link on the Ftax website will take you to a login screen on the HMRC website:
Once you have logged in using your Government Gateway username and password, you will be taken directly to the correct page. Click the green 'Grant authority' button.
When you have clicked on the 'Grant authority' button, you will be taken automatically to the Ftax Support homepage where you will see a confirmation screen. This authority is valid for 18 months after your last use. Each time you use Ftax, the 18 month time frame is updated so that in practice, you may never need to reauthorise Ftax to act on your behalf. You can remove the authority at any time by following the appropriate link from the HMRC page shown in step 3 above.
It is possible that you may need to reauthorise Ftax to act on your behalf: for example if 18 months has elapsed since your last use; or if you have made any changes to your Government Gateway credentials. To reauthorise Ftax, log in to your Ftax account, go to the account home page and click the link 'Click here to authorise Ftax'. This will take you directly to the appropriate page on the HMRC website. Important: Please make sure that you unauthorise Ftax before reauthorising it.
